Fry: My battle with mental illness

Stephen Fry was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, an illness that involves episodes of mania and depression, after attempting suicide 11 years ago.

Stephen Fry, pictured above, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, an illness that involves episodes of mania and depression, after attempting suicide 11 years ago.

In the now renown tv documentary, Mr Fry interviewed celebrities who suffer from bipolar disorder, and spoke to people about living with this condition, which affects four million Britons.

Thank you Stephen! - the more that celebrities and other high profile people speak out, the more it is likely to promote understanding and reduce the stigma that we mental health service users experience on a regular basis.

We can then feel less that we live in a 'them and us' society where we can only exist apart from 'normal' people and can feel free to move more easily in our recovery back to a social inclusion.

Recovery Groups:
dateline 25 March 2008

We continue to run Wellness & Recovery Groups at Hahnemann House, Bournemouth.

We initially ran our groups for 16 -17 weeks for 90 minutes a session but have now adopted a format of running for 10 weeks with two 1 hour sessions each week.

One session runs as a supported group, brainstorming and working individually to complete each section of the WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan). The second acts as a peer support, themed based session, concentrating, more deeply, on the issues that are generated.

This has resulted in much more focused group with a higher retention rate of individuals completing all sessions.

Our Recovery groups are not focused on cure or denial of mental health problems but on the process by which we can recover from and learn to live with our difficulties.

"Symptoms" and the need for medication and other coping tools may persist but this does not have to prevent us from rebuilding our lives and self-esteem.

This "journey" of recovery will be different for each individual. It stems from within us and can never be imposed upon us.

This group recognises and values the unique knowledge and coping experience that each member brings to the session, and aims to empower us to help each other and to move our recovery forward.

We work to share our experiences with other organisations, to promote and assist in the setting up of more Recovery Groups across the region
